We all love the
summer months but the changes in weather (rain, sun, rain, sun!) can play havoc
with our skin. Your skin is your biggest organ, but being on your bodies
exterior means that it is continuously exposed to the environment. I see many patients over the
summer months with acne brought on by sweating.
In our changeable
weather it’s hard to know how to dress in the morning. Often we are dressed warmly and by
lunchtime are hot and sweaty. We
also tend to do more sports in summer and socialise more, running from one
place to the next. It’s no
surprise that deodorant sales soar in the summer months! However summer can bring on a form of
acne called Pityrosporum Folliculitis.
This is a form of acne that results in bright red pimples on your back,
chest, forehead and along your hairline and chin. Those most prone to this type
of acne are often teenagers and younger adults due to the combination of sweat
and oily teenage skin bringing rise to a flare up.
My advice to
prevent this is to keep your skin as clean as possible and wash or shower as
soon as you can after being hot and sweaty and to cleanse your skin with a
medicated product.
To banish summer acne, the skin needs to be treated gently
and treated with high quality products formulated for oily, congested skin.
My Recommendations include:
- Thoroughly cleansing the skin with a product specifically formulated for oily skin. I recommend La Roche-Posay Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel or Effaclar Micellar Water.
- Use a treatment product every day. La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo is a corrective, anti-imperfection care lotion that helps eliminate severe skin imperfections and unclog pores.
- Protect the skin from the sun, which contrary to popular belief, is a false-friend to acne. Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Extreme Fluid is a very high facial sun protection lotion with high UVA protection. It is also fragrance and paraben free and non-comedogenic which means it won't clog the pores.
· And finally …….Never,
ever squeeze the spots!
